This Year, South Tampa's Holiday Season Comes In Over the Platt Street Bridge

On Thanksgiving morning, the first runners of the Tampa YMCA Turkey Gobble will come off the Platt Street Bridge and turn onto Bayshore Boulevard. They will have started at Benchmark International Arena in Channelside. Three weeks later, the onbikes Winter Wonder Ride follows the same path from the same arena. That evening, the Tampa Riverwalk's lighted boat parade lights up the downtown waterfront.

The season's two holiday races are staged downtown in 2026. South Tampa's share of them happens on the boulevard. Knowing which mornings Bayshore belongs to the runners and riders, and where the lights on the water actually go, is what makes the calendar work from Hyde Park, Davis Islands or Palma Ceia.

The dates that touch the neighborhood

Date Event Where it meets South Tampa
Thu., Nov. 19 Holiday Happening and tree lighting Hyde Park Village, from 5:30 p.m.
Thu., Nov. 26 Tampa YMCA Turkey Gobble Bayshore Boulevard, early morning
Sun., Dec. 6 Fresh Market at Hyde Park Village Hyde Park Village, from 10 a.m.
Sat., Dec. 19 onbikes Winter Wonder Ride Bayshore Boulevard, from 8:30 a.m.
Sat., Dec. 19 Holiday Lighted Boat Parade Downtown waterfront, from 6:15 p.m.

Thanksgiving morning is a short, defined window

The Turkey Gobble's 5K starts at 7 a.m. and costs $40. The one-mile event starts at 8:15 a.m. and costs $25. The race is an out-and-back from Benchmark International Arena, across the Platt Street Bridge and onto Bayshore Boulevard. Proceeds support the Tampa Metropolitan Area YMCA's healthy-living programs.

The street-closure request filed with the City this fall sets out how long the boulevard is involved. The permit paperwork asks to close Bayshore and the rest of the race route from 6:30 to 9 a.m. It asks to close Channelside Drive between Jefferson and Florida from 4:30 to 10 a.m. 5K runners are to be off the road by 8:30 a.m., one-mile participants by 9 a.m., and the bridge is to be cleared by 8:45 a.m. These are the hours requested in the filing, so the posted closure notice is the final word.

For a household hosting Thanksgiving, the practical boundary is 9 a.m. A grocery run, an airport pickup or a drive across the bridge to downtown before that hour works best on routes that avoid Bayshore and the Platt Street Bridge. After it, the boulevard is expected to be back in normal use for the rest of the holiday.

The Winter Wonder Ride moved, and its new date lands on parade day

The Winter Wonder Ride is the part of the calendar that changed most. In 2025, it ran on Saturday, Dec. 6, and started at Cotanchobee Fort Brooke Park at 9 a.m. The City's traffic advisory that year closed Bayshore to Rome from 8 to 11 a.m.

For its 15th year, onbikes is holding the ride on Saturday, Dec. 19, 2026, at Ford Thunder Alley at Benchmark International Arena, 401 Channelside Drive. Gates open at 7 a.m. The 4.5-mile bike ride departs at 8:30 a.m. and the 5K run and walk starts at 8:55 a.m., both along Bayshore Boulevard. Before the start there is bike decorating, plus face painting from 7 to 9 a.m., a kid zone, pictures with Santa and an appearance from ThunderBug. Standard tickets are $15 plus fees, or $16.48 with fees, and a four-ticket family pack comes to $55.14 with fees through the ticketing page.

The City Council agenda for Oct. 15 listed the ride's special-event permit for Channelside Drive, the Platt Street Bridge and Bayshore Boulevard on Dec. 19. The bike ride now leaves half an hour earlier than last year's 9 a.m. start. That moves the morning on the boulevard earlier as well, and it fits Dec. 19 into one long holiday Saturday.

Saturday, Dec. 19 is the day to plan around

Friends of the Riverwalk has set the Holiday Lighted Boat Parade for Saturday, Dec. 19, 2026, at 6:15 p.m., with boats passing Sparkman Wharf and the Convention Center on their way to Armature Works. Charley Belcher is this year's grand marshal.

In recent years, South Tampa's side of the water has been part of the show. The 2024 captain's instructions lined boats up at the southern tip of Harbour Island and started the small boats at the lighthouse there at 6:30 p.m. The viewing schedule listed "Davis Islands & Channel Drive" at 7:45 p.m., just before the Sparkman Wharf finish. In 2025, That's So Tampa reported that the parade kicked off near the lighthouse off Davis Islands. Large boats finished near the Tampa Convention Center, and smaller boats went on upriver past Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park and Ulele to Water Works Park and Armature Works.

On Davis Islands, that meant the boats came past without anyone needing to drive downtown. The parade map on the Friends of the Riverwalk page is the thing to check before you pick a viewing spot this year. Last year's local coverage named Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park at 600 N. Ashley Drive, the Tampa Convention Center at 333 S. Franklin Street and Sparkman Wharf at 615 Channelside Drive as prime viewing areas.

The Saturday runs like this.

  1. 7 a.m. Gates open at Ford Thunder Alley for Winter Wonder Ride decorating and kid activities.
  2. 8:30 a.m. Riders head out toward Bayshore. The 5K follows at 8:55 a.m.
  3. Midday. A free afternoon. Winter Village at Curtis Hixon opens at noon on its regular days, according to its calendar.
  4. 6:15 p.m. The boat parade begins.

For anyone living along Bayshore who is not taking part, the morning is the part to plan around. The evening happens a short drive north.

What stays inside the neighborhood fills the quieter dates

With the races staged downtown, the two holiday dates held in South Tampa itself are both at Hyde Park Village, and both fall away from the busy Saturdays.

Holiday Happening is on Thursday, Nov. 19, starting at 5:30 p.m., with live music, Tampa City Ballet, Santa and the tree lighting at 7:45 p.m. The City of Tampa's listing says the event is free and open to the public with no preregistration. Being on a weeknight keeps it a neighborhood evening, a week before Thanksgiving and a day before Winter Village opens downtown.

The Fresh Market at Hyde Park Village returns on Sunday, Dec. 6, starting at 10 a.m. Tampa Bay Markets runs it on the first Sunday of every month with more than 90 vendors and free parking. It falls the morning after Tampa's Santa Fest downtown. The 2026 Winter Village program schedules the Santa Fest parade at 1 p.m. on Dec. 5, activities in the park from 1 to 5 p.m. and the tree lighting at 6 p.m. at Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park, all free. That makes the first weekend of December one weekend split across both sides of the bridge.

The downtown anchor running all season

Winter Village, presented by the Tampa Bay Lightning, runs from Nov. 20, 2026, through Jan. 3, 2027, at Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park, 600 N. Ashley Drive. Opening night is Nov. 20 from 5 to 9 p.m. Admission is free. Skating costs $17 per skater, or $15 for children under 12, which covers skate rental and 75 minutes on the ice. Skating tickets went on sale Nov. 6.

Curtis Hixon is also where Santa Fest's tree lighting happens on Dec. 5 and one of last year's prime boat parade viewing areas, which makes it the easiest downtown stop to pair with either date.

The way Bayshore is used from one week to the next is a large part of what makes the streets around it what they are.
